Stress is one of our biggest health problems. It is said to be the cause of everything from cancer to anger to the common cold. So, what do we do about it?
All stress comes from two factors - high demands on our system and a lack of resilience to support us! Here are some of the tips I have offered to others through guidance from Spirit.
These tips aim to calm the mind and body, whilst helping you develop a connection to yourself. They will help you develop inner-resources so stress becomes less of a problem in your life.
Breathe: The first thing we do when stress starts to creep up on us is to stop breathing. We forget that the more air in our system, the better we are able to cope. Air brings life to the body - including mental capacity! Try this short exercise:
Sit or lie somewhere quiet. Take in a breath, feeling the air flow through your nose or mouth and into your body. As you exhale, feel the breath moving out through your nose or mouth expelling whatever you no longer need from your body. Repeat this exercise at least three times, or until you feel more at ease with yourself.
Time out: In the heat of a stressful moment, we need to step away. Let the mind move to other things, momentarily, before coming back to what you are doing. If things get tough, you start to feel angry or frustrated, take a walk or go outside. If you allow the mind to clear this way, you will find it easier to pick up again and get on with the job!
